FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

A bombilla is a drinking straw with a filter at the bottom – it prevents you from drinking yerba mate leaves. Here's how: Fill your cup with yerba mate, insert the bombilla with the filter facing down, pour in hot water, and drink. No tea filter needed, no waste – simply rinse and reuse.

What is a bombilla?

The bombilla filters the yerba mate leaves as you drink. Without it, you would ingest both the leaves and the powder. This allows you to re-infuse your caámate multiple times without drinking the leaves – always a fresh infusion as needed, until the caámate is completely rinsed.

The mate drinking straw is called a bombilla (Spanish) or bomba (Portuguese). In German, it's also called mate drinking straw, mate spoon, or mate drinking tube – but the correct term is bombilla.

The bombilla is not a drinking straw with a filter. The mate goes into the drinking vessel (calabash).

After use, simply rinse with a little dish soap and water, then let it dry. If necessary, place in the dishwasher.

Tip: Boil with baking soda once or twice a year – this will remove deposits and make the bombilla shine like new.
